About 3D Puff

3D puff embroidery uses a foam underlay placed under the stitches, raising the design up off the fabric in a sculptural, dimensional way. Popularized by streetwear and cap brands, 3D puff turns any logo into a tactile, premium statement piece that stands out on the shelf.

At SublimApparel, we run 3D puff on caps, structured polos, and heavyweight streetwear garments. We use high-density foam in 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm thicknesses to control the level of dimension, and we stock 200+ thread colors for matching your brand palette.

3D puff works best with clean, bold designs — heavy line weights, large solid areas, and minimal fine detail. For complex artwork with gradients or fine lines, flat embroidery is usually a better fit.

How 3D Puff Works

  1. 1

    Design optimization

Design is checked for puff compatibility. Fine details, gradients, and small text are simplified or removed for the 3D effect.

  2. 2

    Digitizing with foam underlay

Stitch file is created with a foam underlay layer that sits beneath the top stitches.

  3. 3

    Foam placement

Foam is cut to design shape and placed on the garment before embroidery.

  4. 4

    Embroider

Stitches are sewn through the foam, locking it in place and raising the design off the fabric.

  5. 5

    QC & pack

Each piece is inspected for foam stability, stitch quality, and dimensional consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between puff and regular embroidery?

Regular embroidery lies flat against the fabric. Puff embroidery has a foam underlay that raises the stitches up off the fabric, creating a 3D effect.

Can I do 3D puff on garments other than caps?

Yes — we run puff on heavyweight hoodies, structured polos, and twill jackets. The fabric needs to be firm enough to support the foam.

Does 3D puff last as long as flat embroidery?

Yes. The foam and stitches are permanent. Puff embroidery lasts the life of the garment.

Can any design be puff embroidered?

Bold, simple designs work best. Fine details, small text (under 8mm), and gradients are not recommended for puff — we recommend flat embroidery for those.
